In blunt remarks, US Vice President Harris calls out Israel over ‘catastrophe’ in Gaza

US Vice President Kamala Harris made a strong call on Sunday for the Palestinian militant group Hamas to agree to an immediate six-week ceasefire. She also urged Israel to take greater action to enhance the delivery of aid into Gaza, which she described as a “humanitarian catastrophe” with innocent people suffering.

Harris’s remarks represent some of the strongest statements on the issue by a senior leader within the US government. She emphasized the need for the Israeli government to address the situation and proposed specific measures to facilitate the flow of aid into the densely-populated enclave. The region has been grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, including the risk of famine, following five months of Israel’s military campaign.

Speaking at an event in Selma, Alabama, Harris stressed the urgency of the situation and highlighted the existence of a potential agreement. She called on Hamas to accept the proposed deal, emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire. Harris expressed deep concern about the dire conditions in Gaza, stating that people are starving and describing the inhumane circumstances. She urged the Israeli government to take more significant steps to increase the delivery of aid, insisting that there should be no excuses for inaction.
